The Data Act – Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are my rights under the Data Act?

You may have rights under the Data Act if you are a ‘user’ of our connected products and/or related services in the EU. This means you:
  • Own a connected product (like a Ford connected vehicle); or
  • Have a contractual right to use a connected product (for example, leasing a Ford connected vehicle); or
  • Use a related service of a connected product (for example, FordPass app).
If you fit into one (or more) of these categories, the Data Act gives you two main rights for the data generated by your use of the connected product and/or the related service.

  • Access: You can access the data yourself, following the steps outlined below.
  • Share: You can share the data with third parties of your choice (when located in the EU).
Importantly, these rights do not apply to all data generated by the connected product or the related service. You have these rights to the “readily available data” – essentially, the raw and pre-processed data that are generated directly from your use of the connected product and/or the related service, and that are readily available to us. For example, vehicle data resulting from your use of the connected vehicle, or charger data resulting from your use of the connected charger. We call this “Data” in these FAQs.

Please note that certain data are excluded from the Data Act, including highly enriched data or derived data and other data that are not readily available to us (for example, data generated by your use of third-party applications in the vehicle and that are not collected by Ford).

3. Does the Data Act apply to me if I am outside the EU?

No. You only have rights under the Data Act if you are in the EU, and if you are a user of our connected product (that we sold in the EU) and/or the related service we provide for that connected product. You can also share your Data only with a third-party located in the EU.

4. What should I consider before I share my data with a third-party?

Remember, if you are thinking of sharing your Data with a third-party:
  • You can only share your Data with a third-party in the EU.
  • You should only choose a third-party you trust.
  • You should have a written agreement with the third-party about what Data they can use and how they can use it.
  • We will only send your Data to the third-party you specify, and only upon your specific request. But we will not independently verify any non-Ford person.
Just so you know, the Data Act allows us to charge the third-party if we send your Data directly to them, upon your request. But we will not charge you.

5. What data can I access or share?

The Data you can request and/or share will vary depending on your vehicle model, your subscriptions, the features you have enabled, and your chosen settings.  The Data will fall into one of these categories:

  • Vehicle Data: Core vehicle performance and system status such as battery levels, fuel, mileage and coolant temperature.
  • Vehicle Health:  Diagnostic and maintenance-related information such as tire pressure, oil life and diesel exhaust system status.
  • Driving Data:  How the vehicle is operated and used such as speed, acceleration, braking and seat belt use.
  • Vehicle Location:  Positional and movement data such as GPS coordinates, compass direction and GPS speed.
  • Electric Vehicle Data:  Key electric vehicle metrics such as battery charge level, energy capacity, temperature and motor voltage
  • Charging Data:  Information related to the vehicle’s charging process such as time and duration of charge, voltage, current, charger type and plug status.  This may also include charger data, if available.
  • Trip Data:  When you use navigation or trip planning features, journey information such as route, fuel consumption, total distance and electric-only travel range.
  • Vehicle Security:  Status of security systems such as alarms, door locks and window position.
  • Speciality Vehicle Manufacturer Data:  High-level details about Specialty Vehicle Manufacturer installed modules, including input and output status of those modules.

Remember, if your product is not connected (for example, if you have not registered your vehicle to your FordPass account), there will be no Data for us to give to you, or for you to access or share with third parties.

If you want to understand what Data may be available (and therefore what Data you can request access to and/or share with third parties), you can find that information in a table here. Again, the Data available for your specific vehicle may vary based on your vehicle model, your subscriptions, the features you have enabled, and your chosen settings.

Where technically feasible, we will provide the Data (to you or the third-party you specify) in a continuous format and in real-time through a Ford API.  We call this Continuous Data.  We will provide other Data in a non-continuous format, as downloadable JSON files.   We call this Historical Data

6. How can I understand and interpret my Data?

If you, or a third-party you share your Data with, need a description of the Data, you can find this in our data dictionaries.
  • Data dictionaries for Continuous Data: here
  • Data dictionaries for Historical Data: here

8. How can I access or share my Data?

Ready to access or share your Data? Choose the option below that best suits you and follow the steps outlined. The process may be different depending on your relationship with the connected product or related service (for example, whether you are a FordPass customer or a Ford Pro customer) and whether you are requesting Continuous Data or Historical Data. You will need an account with Ford.

  1. 1. I use a Ford connected vehicle, but I don’t have an account with Ford. How can I request access to my Data?
If you do not have a FordPass account or have not previously registered your vehicle to a valid FordPass account, please note that there will not be any Data available.

You can find more information about FordPass and registering your vehicle to a FordPass account on our Ford Connectivity page.

2. I am a FordPass customer. How do I access my Data?

To access your Data, please follow the steps outlined below.

Please note: If there are multiple FordPass account holders for the same connected vehicle and/or Wallbox, each authorized user or Ford Pass account holder will be able to exercise the same rights of Data access and third-party Data sharing. Each authorized user is responsible for notifying any other user(s) and obtaining their consent before requesting any Data that may be generated by their use of the connected vehicle, Wallbox or related service.

The steps are different depending on whether you are accessing Historical Data or Continuous Data (please see FAQ5 for more information about the difference between Historical Data and Continuous Data).

2.1  FordPass customer - Accessing your Historical Data

Step 1: Please ensure that you have a valid FordPass account and that your vehicle and/or Wallbox is registered to your FordPass account.  You can find more information about FordPass and registering your vehicle or Wallbox to your FordPass account here [URL]. https://www.ford.co.uk/technology/connectivity
Before requesting Data, please be sure to notify any other users and obtain their consent before requesting access to any Data that may be generated by their use of the connected vehicle, Wallbox or related service.

Step 2: Please sign in to the Historical Connected Gateway here [URL] using your FordPass account.

Step 3: Please complete the Customer Intake Form on Historical Connected Gateway.
  • You will need to provide the VIN number(s) for the vehicle(s) you want the Data for. If you are requesting Wallbox Data, VIN is not required.
  • You will also need to provide the time period for which you want the Data. You can only request the Data generated from 12 September 2025, up to the date that is 2 days before the date you are making the request (this ensures all system data is synchronized).
  • Please follow the instructions on the Historical Connected Gateway and validate your VIN . Then please submit the Customer Intake Form.

Step 4: Once you have completed and submitted the Customer Intake Form, you should receive an email from Ford to the email address you gave in the Customer Intake Form. Please check your email and verify your request details.

Step 5: Your request will be processed by Ford. If you have not received your requested Data or any information from Ford within 28 days of you receiving the email in Step 4, please contact Ford at [URL for FAQ7].

Step 6: You will receive an email from Ford with a link confirming that the requested Data is ready for you to download. The Data will be available to download for 7 days.

2.2  FordPass customer - Accessing your Continuous Data

Alternatively, if you want access to the Continuous Data (real time data to be made available through an API) including Wallbox data, please follow the below steps.

Step 1: Please ensure that you have a valid FordPass account and that your vehicle and/or Wallbox is registered to your FordPass account. You can find more information about FordPass and registering your vehicle or Wallbox to your account here [URL]. Before requesting Data, please be sure to notify any other users and obtain their consent before requesting access to any Data that may be generated by their use of the vehicle, Wallbox or related service.

Please utilise the retrieved URL and log in using your Ford Member (FordPass) account login to link your vehicle. Once linked, you will be redirected to the redirect URI you provided, and you will receive a token at your redirect URI.

Step 6: You may now utilize the API to retrieve Data via your desired platform

3.  I am a FordPass customer. How can I share my Data with third parties?

Please carefully note the points in FAQ4 (What should I consider before I share my data with a third-party) before sharing any data with a third-party. Please also note that if there are multiple FordPass account holders for the same Ford connected vehicle or Wallbox, each authorized user or FordPass account holder can share the Data with third parties, as well as terminate Data sharing with third parties. This means that even if you decide to share your Data with a third-party, other authorized users who are connected to the same vehicle or Wallbox can terminate the data sharing. Each authorized user is responsible for notifying any other users and obtaining their consent before requesting to share any Data that may be generated by their use of the connected vehicle, Sharing your Historical Data with third parties

You have two ways to share your Historical Data with third parties. You can either:

  • obtain and download the Historical Data files yourself (by following the steps in FAQ8.2) and share the files directly with a third-party of your choice; or
  • tell the third-party to request your Historical Data on your behalf. In this case, please ask the third-party of your choice to follow the steps in FAQ8.4 (I am a third-party who needs to access the data of a FordPass customer. How can I do this?). Please also see FAQ8.4 to understand how you can stop sharing Historical Data with third parties, if you change your mind.
Sharing Continuous Data with third parties

To share Continuous Data (in real time Data through an API) with a third-party data recipient, please ask them to follow the steps outlined in FAQ 8.4.2 below. If you need additional help, please contact customer service (see contact information in FAQ 7).

4. I am a third-party who needs to access Data of a FordPass customer. How can I do this?

Note to third parties (not Ford customers): A third-party (a non-Ford customer) should only follow these steps to request access to the Ford customer’s Data if that third-party has been specifically appointed by the Ford customer to be a data recipient under Article 5 of the Data Act. The third-party must obtain the consent of the customer and any other users whose Data may be within the scope of the requested Data. The third-party must also have a written agreement with the Ford customer (whose Data they are accessing) that details the scope of Data that can be accessed and used, and how and for what purpose the Data can be used. Where Ford shares the Ford customer’s Data directly with the third-party data recipient (upon the Ford customer’s request), Ford may charge compensation to the third-party data recipient and may set or change the rate of compensation from time to time.

  1. 4.1 Requesting access to Historical Data of FordPass customers as a third-party data recipient
If you are a third-party data recipient, you can request access to a Ford customer’s Historical Data on their behalf by following the below steps. If your request is processed successfully, you will receive a link to a location where you can download the files containing Historical Data (in JSON format).

Otherwise, the request will be cancelled.
  • You will need to provide the VIN number(s) for the vehicle(s) if requesting vehicle-related data. You will also need to provide the time period for the Data you are requesting (i.e., how far back you want the Historical Data for). If you are requesting our customer’s Wallbox Data, you do not need to provide any VIN number(s).
  • Please note, you can only request data from 12 September 2025, and up to the date that is 2 days from the date you are making the request (this ensures all system data is synchronized).

Step 4: Once you have completed and submitted the Agent Intake Form, you should receive an email from Ford to the email address you gave in the Agent Intake Form. Please check your email and verify your request details.

Please note, if you revoke consent after the third-party recipient has already downloaded the Data, the revocation will not delete the Data from the downloaded location.  The link enabling access to the data will automatically expire in 7 days or earlier if you revoke your consent.

  1. 4.2 Requesting access to Continuous Data of FordPass customers as a third-party data recipient

Alternatively, if you have been appointed as a third-party data recipient by a Ford customer to make a request for their Continuous Data (real time Data through an API) on their behalf, please follow these steps.
